Copy Cat Art

Zombie Art on the Walls Why does so many abstracts look the same? A good question. I just read this article and it is a real eye opener into the world of art collectors today and why so much bad art is made/sold. Some artists are just in for the money, no real feelings for their work. Make sure to see the slide show. I look at a lot of art on my Facebook, in magazines, etc, and I see this also, but from another stand point. There are a few well known artists out there who are very social, give workshops, share too much. The result being that their students come out of the workshops painting like the teachers. They really don't have their own voice. They see that the teacher sells well and they wish to do the same so they copy expecting instant sales. As a result there is an flood of paintings that look the same. Then they don't sell. They get bummed and quit before finding their own artistic voice. It's really sad. Dark Places

Image
On one of the art forums I am on we were given an exercise to do a self portrait either literally or inner self portrait. As an abstract artist I choose to do an inner selfie. As I got to thinking about how I would proceed I took a deep look at myself and realized I had issues. Inner demons. I don't think I will ever address them as I have lived this long with them and have been able to function semi normally. They are just things I would not want to share, not even to a therapist. They are not that deadly. As for the painting I choose to begin with a dark textured background to underscore the dark and scarred landscape of my inner self. I used crackle medium to show the cracks in my exterior, red for the passionate me, pink for the girl that always wanted to be but could not, circles for my favorite shape, gold leaf, orange interference paint, and rhinestones to reflect the sparkle I have to enjoy life, John 3:16 and a cross for my faith, and the lyric from an Eagle's so...

Some decisions

Last week I was given some good advice from a great selling artist and have decided to take said advice. I have decided to tighten in my online presence as an artist and close down some of the sites that I am on.  I just do not have the time to monitor my pages on them, look at other artists' works, and comment.  Honestly, I haven't been on many of them in years. I have also decided concentrate on painting and trying to sell originals and getting into galleries, so I am closing down my print sites. I really haven't sold on those either. My work just does not lend itself well to prints. To much texture and "bling" in them. I rather have people own the real thing and I do offer smaller pieces at better prices. I am hoping to have my house paid off by the end of the year at which time I am quitting my 40+hours six days a week job, getting something part time and just working on my art career. Some more decisions will be made then as well.

Some really good advice for anyone going into a creative field. I especially like what he said about making something just for the money not being your best. Love what you are making first.
